Pitcher's dual in the capital...

A day where it was more like football weather rather than baseball weather, the Atlanta Braves out pitched the Washington Nationals in a 2-0 win. With temperatures in the 40's, overcast and rainy, the Braves took control of the game early off of an RBI single by catcher Brian McCann, driving home third baseman Chipper Jones from third. And for the second straight year, right fielder Jason Heyward belted a solo homer into the right field stands on his first at-bat of the season. That's all the runs the Braves needed as they claimed their first W of the season.

So we are on to that magical 162-0 record, right? Not!!! That would be nice, but it's not going to happen. Ever!!! Not for the Braves or any team. There is one certainty, and that is every team will win and loose at least 54 games.

In a game that resembled the team in the early 90's, only a couple runs and great pitching earns a win. Starting pitcher Derek Lowe gave up no runs, while only giving up three hits in 5.2 inning pitched to earn the win. Lowe seemed to be in the zone striking out six and only walking two runners. And closer Craig Kimbrel earned his first save while knocking the Nationals out one, two, three, in the bottom of the ninth.

Hopefully the rest of the season will fare as well as this game did. Braves stayed rather healthy during spring training, and they came away from this game with no injuring as well. The health of a team is the big sign of how the season usually plays out for a team. Resting players and planned days off are necessary for a long drawn out season.

Today is an off day for both teams. Funny, I guess is what you call it. Both played one game that matters, then both take a day off. Both Braves and Nationals meet back up at Nationals Park Saturday afternoon, April 2 at 1:05pm.
