Parcells regrets...

Well, if nothing else is going good this offseason with the NFL lockout, this little tidbit made me smile. Former Miami Dolphins Vice President of Football Operations Bill Parcells told the Miami Herald that he wished he had selected Quarterback Matt Ryan when he had the chance back in the 2008 draft. Instead, Parcells chose Offensive Tackle Jack Long. Well at least something kind of went right for the Falcons.

Since selecting Ryan, he has gone 33-13 over three years as the starter, and has made one Pro Bowl. Ryan has an 0-2 record in the playoffs, but that's okay. I look at it as he is just getting his feet wet. Colts starting quarterback Peyton Manning took a few years for him to win a playoff game. But he finally did, and has a Super Bowl ring to back his Hall of Fame career up once he retires.

Long has been selected to the Pro Bowl all three years he has been in the league. During that time, Parcells probably had the mindset of who knows how Ryan will be in the NFL. Looking back on QB's going in the first pick, Parcells was going with the safe choice. But sometimes you have to take a gamble. And this gamble paid off for Atlanta. Ryan is going to have a great career. Hopefully he will have some playoff wins and Super Bowl Championships to go along with it. He already has one NFL South Division Title.
