Once again, the NFL is changing the rules. At the NFL Annual Meetings in New Orleans this past Tuesday, changes were made to have kickoffs moved from the 30-yard line up to the 35. That passed. Because of this, the owners were also discussing moving touchbacks from the 20 to the 25-yard line. That didn't pass. Touchbacks will remain at the 20. I wonder if the change of the touchback would have passed, would that change the redzone as well? Currently, the redzone starts at the 20-yard line. If moved to the 25, maybe the redzone would start at the 25. But we don't have to worry about that change.
Also, changes in the replay system was placed on the table for discussion as well. One notable change passed. The replay official has the ability to review a score at any point during the game. So what does this mean? A team scores early in the game, does the replay official have the ability late in the game to go back and review that score, and possibly overturn the score? So far there is not too much explanation over this change. I imagine there is a point in the game where it is too late to review a score. Really, that wouldn't be fair to the team the points were taken off for. Just think if those points taken off were for the home team. The fans would be in an upoar, and head coaches would be popping blood vessels.
The proposal to keep the red challenge flag the same stays. Coaches will still earn a third challenge for two that they win.
To me, it seems like offseason football is going on as usual. The annual meeting are still taking place, and the 2011 draft is right around the corner next month. The only difference is the players cannot go to team headquarters to workout, or do whatever they do at headquarters. And no OTA's. Hopefully all players are working out on their own in hopes to be able to play some ball this fall. Owners and player representatives are scheduled to get back to negotiations on working out a new deal April 6. Lets get it done guys!!!
