With opening day right around the corner, Braves roll with another win in spring training Grapefruit League action today against the Houston Astros, winning 5-3. Braves seem to be ready for regular season play. Though these games do not count, the games are a good indication of how the season may play out, with health being a key factor as well. The Braves have gone 14-8 so far, while the Astros have fallen behind a little going 10-16.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez has done a good job at resting his veteran players, while letting the younger guys get a lot of playing time in order to earn a roster sport. Just thinking about it, isn't that what spring training is all about anyway. We already know who will more than likely make the team, or even start. So those players get enough playing time during the spring, then rest. Then the other guys take over the rest of the way.
Third baseman Chipper Jones is batting .420, while still resting his knee and getting good playing time in. And the staple in right field, Jason Heyward, who is becoming fan favorite, is resting well every few days, while still playing good baseball.
You know it's getting closer to the games that count when the rotation has already been named. Gonzalez has named the top four pitchers with the fifth spot going to be played out until the end of spring training. The rotation will be last year's opened day pitcher, as well as this year's, right hander Derek Lowe, right hander Tommy Hanson, right hander Tim Hudson, and right hander Jair Jurrjens. The fifth spot will be named soon with the battle between right hander Kris Medlen and left hander Mike Minor.
So let the games begin soon. What else is there to watch this summer and fall. With the NFL talks not going well and the lockout fully under way. Baseball might once again take over football to become America's top past time.
