Are the Atlanta Braves franchise for sale? To be honest with you. I really hope so. Rumors are that Liberty Media, who bought the team from Time Warner in 2007, is putting the organization up for sale. This makes sense to me in so many ways. The obvious is that Liberty Media is located in Colorado. So they own a team in the southeast. That doesn't make sense. Since 2008, they have slashed payroll from $102 million to $84 million. But just like in every situation, it is only rumors until it happens. Even Braves President and CEO Terry McQuirk is unaware that the team is for sale.
My humble opinion on who I believe should buy the Braves. A name that most people in the state of Georgia recognizes, Atlanta Falcons owner, Arthur Blank. He has a little time on his hands right about about now. Well not really. I know he is working really hard to help try to get a new Collective Bargaining Agreement worked out for the NFL.
But my point is this. He turned the Falcons around from being the laughing stock of the NFL to being a top-notched team that players want to play for when he bought the Falcons in 2001. If Blank bought the team, he probably would be able to bring in more revenue, and not cut it. The Braves are under new manager Fredi Gonzalez. Good guy, and the team seems to love the way he manages. But the outcome is still up in the air. Blank is loyal. And he would give Gonzalez time and money to put a good team on the field. And Blank would let Gonzalez ease into the role of manager and not fire him if he doesn't win right out of the gate. That is the problem these days, there doesn't seem to be loyalty anymore. It's what can you do for me know. And if you don't win, your gone. Bring back the days of the 70's and 80's, where legacies were built due to loyalty.
So my request to the Atlanta Braves is this. Think long and hard at finding an owner for the Braves. One who is all about winning and bringing another World Series Championship to Atlanta, and the entire southeast. And hopefully Blank is on their mind.
