The Atlanta Braves wrapped up a three game series against the defending AL champions Texas Rangers yesterday at Turner Field only winning one of the three games. The Rangers capitalized on many Braves errors. In game two on Saturday night, Right fielder Jason Heyward overran a ground ball that rolled to the wall causing two runs to score. Trying to not look at any negatives of this series, a positive is that the Braves didn't lose any ground from the Philadelphia Phillies, but didn't gain ground either, remaining five games back.
In the good news that came on Sunday afternoon, Braves won 4-2, and outfielder Nate McLouth returned to the team from injury, and utility man Joe Mather was optioned out to make room for McLouth. McLouth came up strong going 1-3 at the plate and diving to catch a ball to save a run. Pitching the entire series was still strong. Relief pitching is still strong with Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel leading the way. Venters another strong set up and Kimbrel shut them down in the ninth to earn his 19th save of the season.
If the Braves can somehow get there bats going, and along with the pitching, this team could be unstoppable. The Braves are still strong in the pitching department and are second in the majors with a 3.12 ERA, following only the Phillies with a 3.03 ERA as of before Monday's games. The Braves are 26th in the league in hitting coming in at .238. Needs a lot of improvement. Phillies seem to lead in every category in some way.
The Braves wrap up the homestand and continue interleague play as the Toronto Blue Jays come to town for a three game set. The Braves enter tonight's game 40-33, while the Jays are 36-36. Gametime tonight is 7:00pm. On a side note, former Braves shortstop Yunel Estobar returns to Turner Field. As you may recall, he was traded to the Jays back in 2009 for current Braves shortstop Alex Gonzalez. Will be interesting to see how the fans react to Escobar when his name is called.
