Well, the season has not gone the way I would had hope after the first four games. Yes, the team is 2-2. Still sitting in pretty good shape the rest of the way if they can hold their own. One positive that you can look at from the first quarter of the season is we played three away games to only one home game. The Falcons will have a lot of home games towards the middle to latter part of the season.
So let's take a look at the previous game this past Sunday versus the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle. Falcons won the game 30-28. But it shouldn't have been as close as the final score indicated. In the first half, the Falcons returned to basics, in that they ran the ball to set up the pass. This worked great the first two quarters of the game. Our offense had their D on their heels as we went up 27-7 at the half. And that's where the game really stopped for the Falcons. Guess they adjusted in the second half to the bend but don't break mentality. To me, that is just a horrible game plan to play. Why change the scheme? Let the other team change theirs based on what you are doing. In the second half, the Falcons couldn't sustain any drives. A lot of three and outs. And at the end of the game, only had three points in the second half. At least the offense scores, and plays consistent at most times. Thirty points a game should win you the game majority of the time. The defense is what's worrying me.
Again, the bend but don't break mentality doesn't work in today's NFL. It is considered soft defense. Yes, you can play prevent defense if you are covering for a hail mary, but not the entire game. I see no toughness out of the D. Hit the offensive players in the mouth when they get the ball. Don't play ten yards off the receiver and think you can catch up. It doesn't work anymore. 'Man Up', and tackle your man. Learn basic tackling, back to basics.
At the end of the season, I think the Atlanta Falcons will be there playing for a spot in this year's playoff picture. Even if they don't make the playoffs, I'm hoping they at least contend for a spot and never give up until the end. That's my way of football. You
play and strive for the best. And at the end, don't rely on what the other teams do in order to determine what you do.
The Falcons return back to the comforts of the Georgia Dome this Sunday as they welcome the Super Bowl Champs, Green Bay Packers to town. Kickoff set for 8:15 pm. To be honest, I hope we don't welcome them. Southern hospitality out the window. We need to hit them hard from opening kickoff to the last whistle.
