The Atlanta Braves have been feeling the heat lately, going 5-5 over the last 10 games, which isn't a bad mark since their record is above .500 at 32-28. That record keeps them steady in third place in the tight national league eastern standing. The stat that sticks out the most to me is that the Braves could have moved up and gained ground on the Phillies and Marlins. The Phillies hold the best record in the division at 35-24 and the Marlins are only three games back at 31-26. The Braves are 3 1/2 back, which isn't bad, but again it could be better.
Braves could have had another win in the win column on Memorial Day if, and only if they would have capitalized on all the runners left on base. But the Braves just ran out of chances and in the top of the ninth with reliever George Shirrell gave up the long ball to catcher Kyle Phillips.
Braves are missing the bat of right field Jason Heyward, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury. Earlier in the season manager Freddi Gonzalez rested Heyward a few games and was hoping his shoulder felt better on his return back to the field. The game Heyward returned was the game he reaggravated the shoulder and had to be placed on the DL. Another bat that I have mentioned before is second baseman Dan Uggla. He did have a hit the other night. And superstition says it was because he pulled up his uniform pants, and had the old time showing of the socks look. It helped that game bacause he showed a lot of hussle. Hang in there Uggla, your bat will come around. Keep swinging. and the hits will show soon.
Last night's losing pitcher, Tim Hudson (4-5), has had a rough go of it the last few games. He started off the season going 4-2, then had stiffness in his back, and was held out one start. Upon his return, he hasn't earned a win and has seen his ERA jump from around 3 to 4.14.
Season is yet still young. I know it is June, but anything can happen, and the season can turn around by one swing at the plate or an awesome fielding play. Braves are only 3.5 games back of the Phillies. Braves are off today and open up a three game set versus second place Florida Marlins in Miami Tuesday at 7:10pm.
