Rumblings at the Branch...

All has been quite at the Atlanta Falcons Headquarters in Flowery Branch , Ga. The last couple days players have been showing up and starting individual workouts, with camp starting on Thursday. Starting QB Matt Ryan was the first to enter his code at the gate, and looked like he was surprised to see all the reporters standing at the gate, trying to get a glimpse of all the players entering headquarters.

According to multiple sources, the only notable transaction that the birds have made so far is locking up LB Stephen Nicholas to a 5-year extension. Zach Klein of WSB-TV News in Atlanta is reporting the deal is  worth $17.5 million over those years. That would be about 3.5 million per year.

The Falcons are now about  $14.5 million under the cap after the re-signing of Nicholas. Salary cap for all teams is set at $120 million per year. The two notable players they need to re-sign and then go after are RB Jason Snelling, OT Tyson Clabo, and free agent from the Vikings DE Ray Edwards. Snelling is a reliable to good RB behind bruiser Michael Turner. Snelling can knock them down, and keep on going with reliable speed. The third RB can be a fast swift guy. And Falcons also need to sign Clabo to block and help open the holds for the RB's. The birds have not had a reliable DE to man the other side of the D-line from DE John Abraham. And Edwards would fit the scheme as to what the Falcons do. Word has it he wouldn't mind coming to Atlanta.

Falcons have a pretty good team coming back from last year, even if they lose some keys players to free agency. But, as the old saying goes, hopefully Atlanta can "have addition by subtraction." Release or not resign certain players to add money to sign certain players.
