Minor Leaugue Skipper has eye removed...

After being struck by a line drive hit into the Braves dugout last week by All-Star catcher Brian McCann, doctors were unable to save Luis Salazar's left eye. Salazar, in his first year in the Braves' organization, is slated to manage Class A Advanced Lynchburg.

I am thankful, and I know the entire Braves organization and all of baseball, that nothing worse came out of this. Salazar fell hard in the dugout and hit his head, but there was no brain damage.

Who ever said baseball is not a contact sport. Yes, it isn't football. But players can get hurt just as easily. It is hard to react sometimes to the baseball when it is hit so fast. No one is to blame for this, it was just an accident. I know McCann was upset about this. But players have no idea where the ball is going to be hit. Yes, you try to hit the ball a certain way depending on the situation, and what you are trying to do at that at-bat. But you never know what the outcome is going to be.

This is a fluke accident that doesn't happen often. But it does bring up the debate, should dugouts be entirely protected with a netting? In my opinion, it would help. In all sports, safety comes first, both for players and coaches, and fans as well.

Keep your spirits up Salazar. Glad your doing better, and keep improving in your recovery. GO BRAVES!!!!
