Preseason finally finished...start of new season here

And that makes four for preseason 2012 Falcons football. The Falcons finished up the final game of the preseason with a loss at the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-14. The Falcons came away from preseason with a 1-3 record, with the lone win at the Miami Dolphins in game three. As every arm chair GM knows, the preseason is about scouting your team for the best 53-man roster, not about wins and losses. To me, this preseason has been so different than preseasons of the past. In the past it would just seem that the coaches would sit on the players they have, and not try to move forward with others. First off, with OC Dirk Koetter and DC Mike Nolan taking the reigns on both sides of the ball, the Falcons have legitimate coordinators that can use the talent that they have. And with that talent, hopefully move past the first round of the second season of pro football, the playoffs. With today being cut day to get to 53, the Falcons have already cleaned house a little. Last week, long time backups QB Chris Redman and John Parker Wilson gone, in are rookie QB Dominique Davis and verteran QB Luke McCown to back up starter Matt Ryan. Davis, who backed up Ryan when both were at Boston College, Davis a freshman, Ryan a senior,  has the arm strength to throw downfield, and has the legs to move and scramble downfield if he has to as well. No brainer for a backup to groom. McCown I'm still iffy about. Maybe just a roster spot until another veteran QB is released.Though he does have experience in Koetter's offense.

Listening to Sirius Radio this morning in my car, they were talking about a good fit for Michael Turner would be either the Indianapolis Colts are the Pittsburgh Steelers, because it was said both teams are looking for a bruiser that could just pound the ball and run out the clock. I had to stop for a second and just say whoa!!! Falcons are not going to get rid of Turner just yet. They just want to limit his carries so he is not worn down towards the end of the season. And in Koetter's new offense, he is going to be a big part of the screen game. Turner is still part of the offense. Not time to let him go just yet.

It's going to be interesting to see how this season unfolds. With the first game away at the Kansas City Chiefs, there is going to be a lot of if's that come to life. And if those if's come to life, no telling where this team and how far this team can go.

Stay tuned for more updates on who's cut and who's signed by the Falcons in the coming day's. Deadline to 53-man roster is 7:00pm tonight, but that doesn't mean other transactions won't happen.
