So that makes three...

So one win means one game, two in a row means you have something going, and three wins means a winning streak. The Atlanta Falcons (5-3) entered last Sunday's game versus the Indianapolis Colts (0-9) in Indy riding on two straight wins, and it didn't take long to see where this game was going. With the Falcons being fully rested after coming off the bye, the Falcons took full advantage of the Colts mistakes. Indy elected to receive first, and fumbled the ball away on the opening drive. Atlanta took it back on a short field as RB Michael Turner ran it in for his seventh rushing TD of the season. And with about three minutes left in the opening quarter, the Julio Jones (131 yds, 2 scores) show started. QB Matt Ryan  (275 yds, 3 tds, 1 int) aired it out downfield about fifty plus yards to the endzone where the ball zoomed between two defenders and landed in the diving arms of WR Jones. Touchdown!!! But wait, the official in the endzone called it an incomplete pass. Jones quickly motioned to Head Coach Mike Smith to challenge. The call was overruled, and the Falcons were up 14-0 on the depleted Colts. Jones's second endzone dance of the game, and season, came when he caught a pass from Ryan up the middle and jolted 80 yards to the goal line leaving four Colts defenders in the dust. The team in the black helmets ended up improving their record with three wins in a row, winning 31-7.

I know this is the Colts we are talking about, and they are zero in the win column this year. But what stuck out to me the most is our D gave up zero points. The only points the Colts scored was a miscommunication from Ryan to WR Roddy White, and an interception was returned for the Colts only score. The defense has improved all season, ever since the game one lost to the Chicago Bears. My hat goes off to that side of the ball. The second stat of the game for the defense is they have gone 27 straight contests, going back to the '09 season, in which they have caused and recovered a turnover. And to be honest, the Falcons are the best in the NFC South when it comes to points. This D has only given up 170 points through the first half of the season.

I know I have been critical of my team, and fair enough to say, most fans are when it comes to the team the pull for each and every Sunday. If Sunday's performance by Jones is any indication how his career will be, then moving up from 27th to sixth in this year's draft was worth it. I haven't felt this confident in the receiving corps since the combination of Terance Mathis and Tony Martin back in the Super Bowl run. I just need to take a deep breath every Sunday and know things will be okay. That's why people in football get paid millions of dollars, they know what they are doing.

So the upcoming game for the Dirty Birds is going to be a nail biter. Division rival New Orleans Saints (6-3) kick off a three game homestand for the Falcons. First place in the division is in sight for the Falcons with a win this Sunday at the Georgia Dome. Kickoff is set for 1pm est.
