With preseason game number one clearly in the rearview mirror, The Falcons (0-1) turn their attention towards the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1) for preseason game number two. But as I said earlier, preseason is all about player personel, and getting your team set for the regular season, not about wins and losses. Both teams enter this game 0-1. Falcons headed out of Atlanta this past Tuesday to Jacksonville to get ready for a practice scrimmage on Wednesday and today. Both of these scrimmage sessions are really like a friendly match between both teams. The preseason game is set for this Friday, kickoff is set for 8:00 on Fox. This game is a national game, but it is going to be an easy flowing game with not a whole lot of competition due to the fact that the starters for both teams will probably not even play. Coaches do not even game plan for this game. Basically, they just tell their players to go out there and play. This game is a key game for all the rookies and players trying to make the team. Coaches say go out there and show me what you got. But for me, it is football, and I will watch, no matter if it is preseason.
A player for the Falcons that is trying to show he is back from injury, and he didn't lose a step, is fourth year player WR Harry Douglas. Douglas, an Atlanta native, was drafted in the third round in 2008. He sat out the entire 2009 season after tearing his ACL in training camp. In 2008, Douglas played in all 16 games, tallying 320 yards and one touchdown. Last year he garnered 294 yards and also one TD.This year is a big year for Douglas. It usually takes one full year after returning to play from an ACL injury. Douglas says he is ready to go.
Backup QB Chris Redman, will get the majority of the snaps tomorrow night. He might even start if head coach Mike Smith feels starting QB really doesn't need to play, and risk injury.
On a sidenote, Falcons signed 13-year veteran Reggie Kelly Wednesday to backup TE Tony Gonzalez. Kelly was drafted by the Falcons in the second round back in 1999. He was a Falcon from 1999-2002 where he was released and picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals. Kelly had his best years as a Falcon. But he is not going to take away receptions from Gonzalez, he was brought in here because of his blocking skills, and due to the fact backup TE Justin Peele tore up his knee in the preseason game versus the Dolphins.
I'm hoping for a better outcome with the score this game, but if the Falcons lose, lets just look how the individual players played, then breakdown the first team from the backups, and so forth.
