So a deal could possible be forthcoming and agreed upon by the July 15 deadline? Well, it's true!!! Both NFL parties including lawyers got back to the negotiating table yesterday for about 7 1/2 hours until about 5pm. Lawyers are back into the mix not to argue both sides to irk out money from both, but to get the ball rolling on writing out the wording for the new agreement. According to sources, an agreement is ready, but both sides are not wanting to say an agreement is finalized quite yet. Doesn't it seem that when a story is leaked about anything per say, it is always denied until the date they want it to come out. In this case, maybe a deal is set, but the NFL doesn't want to say anything until the 15. They just want to linger.
And why you might ask why the 15th deadline is so crucial. For one, the players need to get their proper amount of work in before OTA's, training camps, and preseason. According to NFL.com, if an agreement is not signed by the 15th, $1 billion could be lost with the cancellation of preseason games. Even with a possible agreement in the works by both sides, there is still one major problem, NFL retirees. They are suing because they want proper benefits. If this is found liable, then indeed this will need to be worked into the new CBA as well. The retirees do have a case. Just like with any company, and the NFL is a company nowadays, you do not want your benefits to run out. In this sport, with your body getting battered and bruised each and every Sunday, you want to know that proper and fair treatment will be there for you. And I also know that a lot of retirees do not get paid like current players do. The money may not always bee there for them. But they did get paid better than the average Joe. If it were me in this situation, I would want to have proper care, but I would also have a backup plan in investing my money so I know proper treatment would not be an issue in the future. I have heard plenty of stories in my lifetime about former and current players running out of money. Word of advise to them, INVEST, INVEST, INVEST. I know, that's an entirely different topic.
But as I said before, hopefully an agreement will be forthcoming, and the greatest sport in the US will get back on the field.
